My wife and I arose at dawn on September 18, 2001 and watched Mt. McKinley also known as "Denali" (which is Athabascan for "The Great One"), see the first light of day, from our room at the Mt. McKinley Wilderness Lodge, 30 miles away. We proceeded to catch an early morning sightseeing bus to the little town of Talkeetna, which when we arrived was bathed in early morning fog, and had a cloud ceiling of only 800 feet. It was Betty’s birthday and I asked her what she would like to do.

She replied, “ I’m not sure, but I’ll tell you what I don’t want to do ----- and that is: fly in this weather to the mountain!”. We were standing in front of the little Talkeetna Airport looking at a small 8-seat twin engine sight seeing aircraft. Two seats were left. I had 3 cameras with me (a 35mm with 3 lenses, a digital with zoom, and a video camera). The front seat, next to the pilot, was still available, as was the seat behind it. The rest is history.

We cleared the cloud cover at 2000 feet and were welcomed by the most spectacular view we have ever seen. The flight lasted an hour and a half, and at a speed of 200mph we arrived at Mt. McKinley in less than 20 minutes.

Our very capable pilot narrated the various peaks as we flew over, around, between, and under them.

We flew close to Mt. Foraker, Mr. Hunter, Mr. Huntington, Mt. Silverthrone, The Mooses Tooth, and of course the majestic Mt. McKinley which itself has 2 peaks, The North and The South.

We counted 8 glaciers, but I’m sure there are more.

The Denali Range has is own weather system and is quite often different from anything on the lowlands. Fifty per cent of the mountain peaks are covered with snow all year long.

For those hikers interested, round trip to climb is 46 miles, with an estimated time on the trail of 3 weeks. Climbing season is short. In early May, one might still experience minus 50-degree temperatures at the 17,500 foot camp.
